Biographical Text

Kirby was well known in Southern League circles prior to his move to Exeter City in the summer of 1913. He had signed for Portsmouth in 1904 and in seven seasons with the Fratton Park club scored 80 goals in just over 200 appearances.

Before moving to Portsmouth, Kirby had also played for Swindon Town (in two spells) and West Ham United.

He then moved back to join his home town team of Preston North End in 1911, and he featured in 55 Football League matches, scoring 22 goals.

He made his Exeter City debut in the opening game of the 1913-14 season against Southampton.

However, he never reproduced the form he had shown at his previous clubs and had played his final first team game for the Grecians by October 1913.

After leaving Exeter after just one season, he then featured for Merthyr Town, Croydon Common and Brentford.

William Kirby died on 3rd October 1917 while serving in the East Yorkshire Regiment during the First World War.
