Biographical Text

Harry (Henry) Singlehurst appeared for Exeter City during the club’s amateur era in the Plymouth and District League (1905-1908). He then signed as a professional when the club entered the Southern League although he did not make an appearance in that competition.

Making a goalscoring debut against Gunnislake on 9 March 1907, he played three games that season and another 26 in 1907/08 when he contributed ten league goals.

When the club turned professional ahead of the following season, he was one of the very few amateurs who joined the ranks of the professionals. Remaining on the fringes of the first-team, he was retained for the following season ahead of signing to play for Torquay Town in 1910/11.

Born in Malta, he appears on the 1911 census as a 22-year-old assurance collector living in Heavitree. This suggests he was aged around eighteen when he first played for Exeter City. Later records suggest he served in the Royal Navy during the Great War and later moved to Kingswood near Bristol where he died in 1958.
