Q.P.Rangers 1 Exeter City 0.

Saturday March 12th 1966.

at Loftus-road,
Attendance  7,512.

Following last week's 5-2 defeat on their own ground by Peterborough United the Exeter City team underwent its biggest shake-up for many weeks. Arnold Mitchell, the man who asked for a transfer because he felt he was no longer of any use to Exeter City, was recalled to the team. So was Wilf Carter, and so were three others. Mitchell came back at left half in place of Buckingham, who has been below his usual good form recently. Carter, who has been out of the first team for months, was recalled at centre forward after a series of good reports in reserve games. And on the right wing Stuckey won his place back from Graham Rees, while in the defence Shearing, dropped for the first time, and Ley, who is injured, were replaced by Barnett and Peapell respectively.

Queen's Park Rangers:-
Springett; Watson and Langley; Keen, Hunt, and Sibley; Lazarus, Collins, Allen, Leach, and Morgan.

Exeter City:-
Barnett; Smyth and Peapell; Harford, Harvey, and Mitchell; Stuckey, Banks, Carter, Kennedy, and Blain.

Referee:- Mr M. Fussey, of Nottingham.

On the face of it there was little hope of points from the Rangers, who had won nine and drawn two of their 14 previous home games this season, whatever team formation the City put out, and however much the side was reshuffled, and that was how it turned out, with the Londoners controlling the game quite comfortably and Allen getting the winning goal early in the game.

Exeter Team

Scorers: Weymouth Standley
Exeter Balson, Rees, Richardson,

Exeter City were obviously the faster and more experienced side, and they fully deserved their victory. The superiority was more pronounced in the second half and but for some poor finishing, particularly by Graham Rees, their margin of victory would have been greaterMike Balson gave the visitors an early lead when he scored after only two minutes with a well placed shot. Weymouth were undeterred by this early reverse and went close to equalising on several occasions, but Phil Richardson increased City's lead before the interval, Graham Rees made the issue safe for the visitors when he converted a penalty but he had previously missed a couple of great scoring chances, After Peter Shearing had made a great save from Massey, Standley scored a consolation goal for the home side,

PLYMOUTH ARGYLE 1 :

Scorer;
Exeter Kennedy
Plymouth Foweraker,

Exeter City were held to a draw by a ten man Plymouth Argyle side in a game that was marred by an early injury, Argyle inside right Duncan Neale was taken to hospital in the 5th minute with a rib injury following a tackle by Dennis Feapell. Exeter had nearly all the play in the first half but once again there was no one in the forward line capable of scoring goals, Instead, Plymouth went ahead in the 50th minute when Foweraker beat Bryce Fulton for speed, cut in, and scored from an almost impossible angle, ten minutes later Jack Kennedy ran through and scored a rather soft goal, Peter Shearing brought off a brilliant mid air save from Williams in the closing minutes,

CITY SIGN THREE.

The guessing game as to whether Exeter City would or would not sign any new players before today's tranfer deadline is over, They have signed three new players, John Evans, 25, an inside forward from Carlisle United who previously played for Stockport County, Ray Keeley, 19, an inside forward, and Ray Elliott, 18, both from Charlton Athletic. A substantial sum was involved in securing the three players, Irish International Billy McAdams from Queens Park Rangers also played in the special practice game City arranged yesterday, but has not been signed, Exeter chairman Reg Rose commenting on the new players, said it was not a panic decision and that there maybe further signings befoe the midnight transfer deadline, All three players had been approached by City before. It was felt they should be signed now. It is understood that Evans who City wanted last Summer cost in excess of £3,500. The Charlton players were recommended by Jock Basford
