Exeter City have at last broken their run of six games without a win, Probably the most important feature of this win is the fact that City should now just be out of trouble in having to apply for re-election, Another feature of the game was the form of full back George Ley who had a fine match in front of representatives from Northampton Town & Portsmouth, Both clubs are keen to sign Ley. It was from a Ley chip that City scored the only goal of the game, Jim Ryan heading a fine goal in the 65th minute, Cecil Smyth also had a good game against a Brentford side who did not play a great deal of football, In fact there was a general all round improvement from Exeter particularly in the second half. They worked harder and once they got the goal, it seemed to give the side a lot more confidence, City lost Ray Harford early in the second half with blood streaming from a cut eye, He was replaced by Ben Embery, For a while Brentford got on top a little and threatened to score. But City came back at them to get the two points that could prove very important to them, Jimmy Blain was unlucky not to score with a fine shot from 20 yards and Ryan missed a low cross from Ley when well placed,

PORTSMOUTH ASK CITY TO QUOTE A PRICE.

Portsmouth manager George Smith said today that he was definitely interested in signing Exeter City full back George Ley, he was at St JamesPark last night to watch the player and was very impressed with what he saw, He contacted the City today and asked them to quote a price for Ley, who Portsmouth have been trailing for several weeks,

FRIDAY 28th APRIL 1967.

PORTSMOUTH OFFER TERMS TO GEORGE LEY.

A lunchtime meeting on Monday between Portsmouth manager George Smith and Exeter City's George Ley will decide whether City's 21 year old full back becomes a Second Division player next week, City Chairman Les Kerslake confirmed that terms have been agreed between the clubs, and a fee of £8,000 1 thought to be involved, Exeter do not want to see Ley go, but the player has expressed a desire to play in a higher grade of football and they have not stood in his way.
