IT WASN'T SWEET(ZER) FOR CITY

It looked for a long time as if Exeter City were going to get a point until Brentford struck with the deciding goal 10 minutes from the end. City had battled and worked so hard, having gone into the match without two of their regular players and they probably felt they deserved something for their efforts.

Alan Beer was a lively first half raider for the Grecians, putting a 20-yard shot narrowly over the bar and having another effort smothered by Priddy. However, for the main part the first half was a battle in the midfield. Brentford tried to pressure John Baugh, but the St. Lukes College student was confident behind a defence that never gave an inch.

Brentford went at Exeter in the second half and McCulloch had the ball in the net, but the flag was already raised for offside. The killer goal was engineered by Johnson who crossed for leading scorer Sweetzer to beat the City defence with a header. It was a cruel blow for Exeter, but with a home game to come they can bounce back and continue their promotion claims.
