Liam Oakes, originally from Cornwall but later part of the football programme at Ivybridge Community College, signed for Exeter City as a scholar/trainee after finishing school in 2023. A full-back/wing-back he had been with the club’s academy since the under-9 category.
As an under-16 academy player he was was already playing for Exeter City under-18s in the EFL Youth Alliance in 2022/23. Subsequently starting his scholarship in July 2023, Liam appeared against Crediton United in the Devon St Luke's Bowl in September 2023 and in both of the club's FA Youth Cup games during the 2023/24 season whilst also acting as an unused substitute for the EFL Trophy game against Reading in September 2023.
