Biographical Text

Jim Murray, with Glasgow side Shawfield before the war, played a single Football League match for Exeter City in 1946/47 after featuring regularly in the interim ‘wartime’ competitions the previous season. 

Murray had played for Glasgow side, Shawfield Juniors prior to the Second World War, whilst working as a compositor. He then joined the Royal Marines and he was signed by Exeter City in August 1945 whilst stationed locally and impressing in a pre-season practice match in August 1945.

He featured in 25 of the Division Three South of the Thames League and Cup matches in 1945-46 but only played one Football League Third Division South fixture for the Grecians when lining up against Bristol City at St James’ Park in September 1946.

James Murray died in 1998.
