SWWFL Premier Division
Dorchester (away)

Sunday 31st October 2004

South West Women's Football League Premier Division

Dorchester Town 2
Exeter City Ladies 3

City Ladies took a depleted squad to Dorchester with some key players missing, and came away with three well deserved points. From the whistle City dominated, pegging Dorchester back in their own half.

City had a few chances and were finally rewarded with a goal. After a good build up, Gina Court scored her first goal for the season, whipping in a fine curling ball, which was goal bound before a defender helped it on its way.

City continued to dominate with Court, Rachel Edwards, Jo Goldsworthy and Tracey Cross all going close, with the Dorchester 'keeper pulling off some good saves. After 25 minutes City scored their second. A Stacey Pearson corner caused problems, and the Dorchester 'keeper punched the ball into the back of her own net. Dorchester then stepped up a gear, but City's defence stood firm.

The second half saw Dorchester score an early goal in the first minute, when City were caught napping. Not long after this, against the run of play, Dorchester equalised after a quick break. Both sides had chances but were unable to convert them. City then stepped up a gear in the last 20 minutes and began to dominate again, playing some fine flowing football. They were rewarded with the winner when Tracey Cross floated in an inch perfect cross, which was met by Jo Goldsworthy who's glancing header powered into the bottom corner. City continued to dominate, but were unable to add to their tally.

Manager Steve Mclear said: "Considering we went into this game with important players missing, the team showed great strength of character to come through and win the game. We had players playing out of position and players coming off the bench, all of whom I was very pleased with. 'In the past if we had lost two goals like that we would have crumbled, but my players were composed, focused and showed great team spirit and got the result they deserved. 'It was very pleasing to see Danielle Pearson, Stef Matthews and Emma Mingo all play such a large part in the win with great performances, despite their lack of match practice. We've now won 4 out of our last 5 games, and all credit to the players they've been fantastic".
