Biographical Text

Brother of John Mitton , James began his professional career with Glossop in 1909. He then moved to Darwen in the Lancashire Combination, with whom he spent one season.

At the close of the 1911 he signed for Stockport County where he made his league debut, going on to feature in 88 games, scoring 6 goals.

His stay at Stockport was interrupted by the First World War, and he eventually left the club for Exeter City shortly before the start of the 1921-22 season, making his debut against Charlton Athletic.

Mitton stayed with the Grecians for three seasons, then returning to his native Lancashire, moving on to play for Nelson. However, he failed to make an appearance during his one season with the Seedhill club, and retired from professional football in the summer of 1924.
