Keeper blunder boosts Exeter

EXETER Ladies' FC put the Women's Western League title within their grasp yesterday when they beat their main rivals Cardiff 2-1 away.

Exeter now need to win or draw in the return match at Wyvern Barracks next Sunday and beat Barry, who they have put more than 30 goals past already this season, to take the title. They inflicted Cardiff's first league defeat of the season yesterday but needed a second half own goal to do it. Welsh international goal- keeper Karen Jones took her eye off a back pass with Exeter striker Annie Hes- keth steaming in and the ball shot through her legs and into the net. Cardiff, who took a first half lead but were pegged back by an Annie Hesketh equaliser, pressed strongly towards the end but some stirling work in the Exeter defence kept them at bay.

Match Report 2.

CARDIFF 1 EXETER 2.

Our game was very patchy in this match and the team struggled to fing there so far good consistency.  Cardiff also struggled to find their best form, although they again scored first with a well taken goal. A fast moving game both teams were glad to take heed at half time. With the score 1-1 at half time, both teams came out to a hard fought second half. Play was from end to end until an unfortunate mistake by Cardiff gave us a goal. Soaking up 25 mins. of continual pressure from the Cardiff attack, there was no one more pleased to hear the whistle than our team. Scorers Annie and own goal.
