The Trust Take Over (2003)

Relegation from League Two in 2003 saw the beginning of the end for John Russell and Mike Lewis, the chairman and vice-chairman of Exeter City.

Inadequate performances on the pitch were mirrored by an inadequate running of the club, so when financial irregularities emerged and the two chairmen were arrested, the day-to-day running of the Club was without direction.

After receiving support from Trust chairman Ian Huxham, chief executive Terry Pavey, and Julian Tagg, the Supporters' Trust was called upon by the majority shareholder at the time, Ivor Doble, to fill the role of the disgraced chairmen.

Impressively, the Supporters' Trust, which was initially set up to help buy loan player Gary Alexander, had become the owner of Exeter City by the end of 2003, less that three years after it was established.
