McGill was signed from Hearts in the summer of 1936, he had made 6 first team apperances and scored once, and immediately won a place in the Exeter City team, lining up for the opening game of the season against Notts County.
In his two season stay at St James’ Park, McGill’s most successful was the first one when he played the majority of his games. Although he ended the 1937-38 season in the first team, McGill was released at the end of it and signed for Irish League club, Distillery.
