An amateur throughout his stay at Exeter City, Thomas had been playing for St Luke’s College prior to joining the Grecians. Having played for the reserves from the preceding year, he made a goalscoring first-team debut for the Grecians in a Southern League fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion in April 1911.

Playing in the final five matches of the season, and retaining his amateur status for 1911-12, Thomas featured in eight more Southern League matches for Exeter netting twice against Brighton (again) and Plymouth Argyle.
