Match 14
30/10/2011
League
Larkhall Athletic (Home)

Exeter City 1-0 Larkhall Athletic

Due to the horrific M5 crash City's home tie with Cheltenham last Sunday was cancelled.

It meant their last outing before tomorrow's FA Cup tie here at The Park (1pm) was the top of the table clash with Larkhall Athletic, undoubtedly their toughest league match to date.

Larkhall, who like City had been undefeated so far this season, had been situated above the Grecians for the last week due to playing and winning an additional fixture. This was the first time both teams had met with the groundsman of City's home ground of Topsham Town FC freshly rolling the pitch in advance of the big game. Watched by representatives of the South West Women's Football League and with a big home support, the match was end-to-end for the first half with neither team able to break the deadlock. Larkhall claimed the majority of play in the opening stages, forcing City's keeper Max Coupe to pull off a fantastic save, pushing a shot around the post. City were not without chances, with Helen Kukor, Natalie Shenton and Lola Sanchez each having shots saved. In the second half City turned the tables and pushed forward, showing their desire to claim the top of the table position. Manager Steve Tully made three tactical substitutions bringing on Megan Griffiths, Marika Ghiglia and Alex Spencer for Helen Kukor, Catherine Wright and Emma Redwood, changing the formation from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2.

Moments later and Lola Sanchez's twenty yard effort deflected off the crossbar. Again City applied the pressure, with Alex Spencer's through ball to Shenton being forced out for a corner.

A perfectly placed corner from Kirsty Caunter was then headed home by City's captain Josie Copp to give them the lead. For the remaining ten minutes City put everyone behind the ball to seal the victory and the defence stood firm.

City now find themselves at the top of the South West Women's League Premier Division. And thoughts now turn to the cup.

  • The Ladies also play host to Keynsham Town Development tomorrow at St James' Park (1pm)in the third qualifying round of the Women's FA Cup. Come along and support the girls.
