Biographical Text

Ray Howells played for Exeter City between 1951 and 1953. He joined the club from Crystal Palace and later played for Barnstaple Town. He subsequently joined the police and died at an early age.

Discovered playing for Mid-Rhondda United by Crystal Palace, he joined the Selhurst Park club in June 1947.and, in four seasons, made 25 league appearances and scored five goals.

He moved to Exeter City on a free transfer in July 1951 and made his league debut for the Grecians in a disastrous 0-4 home defeat against Aldershot in September of that year. Leading scorer for the reserves in 1951/52, he had a run of first-team matches towards the end of the season when he scored three times. Featuring rarely during the following season he was released and joined Barnstaple Town in June 1953.

Later appearing for Taunton Town, he joined the Somerset Constabulary in 1955 and died suddenly at his home in Castle Cary in March 1968 aged just 42.
