Biographical Text
Discovered playing for Mid-Rhondda United by Crystal Palace, Howells signed for them in June 1947. In four seasons at Selhurst Park he made 25 league appearances and scored five goals.
Howells moved to Exeter City on a free transfer in July 1951, and made his league debut for the Grecians in what was a disastrous 0-4 home defeat against Aldershot in September of that year. He played for the reserves in the Southern League in 51/52 and was the leading scorer with 16 goals.
He had a run of matches towards the end of the season when he scored three goals, the first of which was against Bournemouth.
Howells spent most of the 1952-53 season playing for the reserves and only appeared in three league games.
Not surprisingly, he was released and joined Barnstaple Town in June 1953, although he had turned down offers from both Newport County and Torquay United.
Howells then played for Canterbury City, before returning to the west country to sign for Taunton Town in February 1955. Three months later he joined the Somerset Constabulary. Howells died suddenly at his home in Castle Cary in March 1968, aged just 41.
