The Grecians went on a day trip to the Essex seaside to play Southend United in a Fourth Division fixture. With  four wins in the opening eleven league matches of the season, Exeter City were out to improve their record although they failed to do so at Southend, the City went on to win promotion for only the second time in the clubs history.
