Biographical Text

Former Torquay United goalkeeper Shaun MacDonald joined Exeter City on a short-term deal in September 2023 which was later extended. Most recently with Cheltenham Town, he had also played for Gateshead and Blyth Spartans.

Starting his career as a teenager with Gateshead in 2015, Shaun switched to Blyth Spartans in 2017 before moving to National League South Torquay United in 2018.  Winning promotion in his first season he went on to make 101 league appearances for the Plainmoor club in a four-year stay that saw him being named player of the season in 2021/22.

Given a chance in the Football League he spent the 2022/23 season with Cheltenham Town where his first-team appearances were restricted to four starts in the EFL Trophy. Released by the Gloucestershire club in the summer of 2023, he was without a club until signing a short-term deal with Exeter City in September 2023.

Now aged twenty-six, and with Aston Villa loanee Viljami Sinisalo on international duty for Finland and Harry Lee on loan at Weston-super-Mare, Shaun was first named in an Exeter City squad as an unused substitute against Leyton Orient on 9 September 2023.

Shaun's first appearance for the club was against Crediton United in the Devon St Luke's Bowl prior to his official first-team debut against Arsenal under-21 in the EFL Trophy in October 2023. Also appearing against Swindon Town in the same competition, Shaun was regularly City's back-up 'keeper in league matches throughout the remainder of the season and - in April 2024 - his contract was extended to the end of 2024/25.
