Biographical Text

Experienced forward Mustapha 'Muzzy' Carayol joined Exeter City as a free agent in September 2024 having most recently been with Burton Albion. Appearing for Torquay United early in his career, he had gone on to play for more than a dozen clubs in England as well as others in Cyprus and Turkey together with the Gambian national team.

Born in Gambia, but moving to Britain as a child, Muzzy was a youth team player with Swindon Town before following coach Paul Ince to both Macclesfield Town and MK Dons where he turned professional and made his debut in senior football. After spending time on loan at Crawley Town, he switched to Torquay United in July 2008 where he became a team mate of future Exeter City assistant manager Kevin Nicholson. Spending two years at Plainmoor - during which time the club won promotion from the Conference - he made in excess of fifty first-team appearances (six goals) before joining Lincoln City after also featuring for Kettering Town on loan.

Moving to Sincil Bank he played in the majority of his new club's games during 2010/11 prior to enjoying a similar one-year stint with Bristol Rovers from where, just short of his 24th birthday, he received his big opportunity with a move to Middlesbrough in August 2012. Spending four years on Teesside, he suffered a number of injuries whilst making 54 first-team appearances (twelve goals) alongside playing on loan for Brighton and Hove Albion, Huddersfield Town and Leeds United together with making his first appearances for the Gambian national team.

Eventually leaving the Riverside in August 2016, Muzzy embarked on an eighteen-month spell with Nottingham Forest for whom he appeared 38 times in all competitions ahead of seeing out the second-half of the 2017/18 campaign with Ipswich Town. Now approaching the age of thirty, Muzzy subsequently spent the seasons preceding Covid-19 appearing for Apollon Limassol in Cyprus and Adana Demirspor in Turkey.

Thereafter resuming his career in England, Muzzy made nearly ninety more senior appearances with Gillingham (2021-22) and Burton Albion (2022-24) before, at the age of thirty-six, signing for Exeter City on a short-term basis on 20 September 2024 ahead of making his debut as a late substitute in the following day's victory over Stevenage and following through with his first start for the club against Tottenham Hotspur under-21s in the EFL Trophy four days later.
