Match 26
13th January 1923
Northampton Town (h)

ECFC 1-2 Northampton Town
Scorers: Crockford (pen)

City V Northampton

Saturday, January 13th, at St James's Park. EXETER CITY 1 NORTHAMPTON TOWN 2.

Last season: City 2 Northampton 0.

St James's Park was thickly covered with hoar frost right up to noon today, and it was impossible to see through the heavy mist. At mid-day the fog lifted to some extent, and the frost began to disappear. When the gates were opened it was still misty, and in the absence of any breeze it was problemematical as to whether it would be possible to complete the game.

Lockett won the toss, but it carried no advantage. The City got busy, facing the St James's Road end, and a raid led by Dockray was repulsed. At the other end Pollard cleared well from Lockett. Clever play by Kirk and Crockford enabled Matthews to win a corner off Jeffs, and from the flag kick Crockford headed for goal, Smith saving close to the upright.

The Cobblers' defence excelled in the first half, when the Exeter forwards maintained their recently improved form, and at half-time the score-board was still blank.

The mist cleared after the interval, and it was possible to get a good view all round the ground. The second half had been in progress twelve minutes when Lockett accepted a neat forward pass, and catching the City backs spreadeagled across the field, made rapid advancement. Ackroyd managed to get level with him, but the Northampton skipper beat off the challenge, and scored with a shot that struck the post and rolled into the goal. Five minutes later Crockford, from the penalty spot, equalised, the award having been against Watson for "hands," and Pease, from a free-kick, obtained the winning goal four minutes from time.
