at St James's Park, Exeter.

EXETER CITY 2 MILLWALL ATHLETIC 1.

Last season: City 1 Millwall 0.

It was felt that if Exeter City succeeded in capturing both the points today they would have done exceedingly well, with the side having undergone important changes, whilst the Millwall Athletic team included all their "stars." To begin with, Exeter lacked the services of Harry Kirk, who has been suspended for one month by the Football Association for his misdemeanour in the Bristol match at Ashton Gate, and Mathieson returned to the attack at inside-left. Southway displaced Coopland at right half, and an injury sustained by Ackroyd resulted in Flynn appearing at left back.

A very popular feature was the fact that John Fort, the popular ex-Grecian, and now of course an English International, was in the ranks of the Millwall side.

The early spectators greatly enjoyed the antics of that well known local sportsman, "Artful" Thomas, who, in nigger minstrel costume, was given the run of the field, and made very good use of it as a Hippodrome advertising stunt. The weather was dull but dry, and the ground in good condition. When the teams appeared on the field the Exeter City Military Band played "Auld Lang Syne" as a tribute to Fort, and the crowd gave him a rousing welcome. He won the toss, and the visitors had the breeze behind them in the first half, and Exeter kicked off facing the "Duke" bank.

Anstiss initiated a very smart attack in the openings seconds, and although baulked by Mitton was so well supported by Keen and Moule that only an intervention by Pollard on the edge of Exeter's penalty area brought the movement to a full stop.

Exeter's reconstructed team scarcely matched Millwall's in the matter of sharp and confident passing, and the home defence was in a tangle on more than one occasion. Only the brilliant goalkeeping of Pavey, and the resolute, if somewhat unorthodox, defence of Pollard and Flynn, kept the Lions out on all but the one occasion when their goal was scored.

After 20 minutes Exeter forced a corner, and from the ensuing centre Davis scored rather luckily, for his shot was diverted out of Lansdale's reach by striking Fort's boot, and the ball finished up in the back of the net. Five minutes before half-time Millwall equalised. Crockford was penalised for offside just beyond the middle line, and from the free kick Morris gained possession ten yards in front of the Exeter goal, and beat Pavey all ends up.

Half-time: City 1 Millwall 1.

Exeter's passing and general play continued to be erratic, and yet they won the match. The winning goal, which was scored by Mathieson, came about through Lansdale coming out too far. Southway centred from the right wing position, and Mathieson headed the ball up in the air, whence it dropped be hind the goalkeeper and trickled into the net.

YEOVIL & PETTERS v CITY RESERVES.

Exeter City Reserves faced Yeovil and Petters United at Yeovil in a Southern League match this afternoon. Included in the home side were two former "Grecians," Potter and Wright.

Yeovil:- Vallis; Day and Brown; Abbott, May, and Potter; Gardiner, Edwards, Wright, Hayward, and Bruzas.

City Reserves:- Fryer; Bell and Harris; Richards, Duke, and Wilson;Newman, Camble, Shelton, Coopland, and Lendon.
Yeovil carried play into the Exeter territory from the kick off and Fryer saved at point-blank range from Wright, and at least four, shots from Gardiner. Eventually, from a nice pass by Potter, Day gave Yeovil the lead. Vallis was hurt in saving from Shelton, and retired, Wright going into goal. Shelton scored two brilliant goals before the interval, when the Grecians led by 2 goals to 1.

Yeovil were at full strength in the second half, Vallis taking up his position in goal. Duke played a brilliant game for Exeter, whose defence was under pressure throughout. In the last minute of the match, from Gardiner's corner kick Hayward rammed the ball into the net, thus equalising.

Result:
Yeovil 2 City Reserves 2.
