MERTHYR TOWN 3 EXETER CITY 1.

Last Season: Merthyr 0 City 0.

Played at last after postponements dating from last December, the meeting of the Martyrs and Exeter City attracted a keenly interested crowd of about three thousand people, who were pleased to see the locals win by three goals to one.

Crockford made an early effort to break through, and in rapid exchanges Merthyr were well served by Abraham, who was making his first appearance in the English League at home. Dempsey headed the ball on to the crossbar, and Pavey picked up the rebound from H.W.Turner. Crompton initiated an Exeter movement which was carrie on down the left wing by Shelton, only to be halted by Langford.

A corner was conceded by Thomas, but this led to nothing, and a renewed Merthyr attack ended with Pavey saving from Thomas. E.Turner sent a fine shot just over the bar, and Dempsey put in another rasping drive which sailed over.

Two Quick Goals.

The game was opened out with long kicking, and the defence of Southway was very serviceable. A free kick, taken at a sharp angle by Abraham, was not allowed to be productive, and Thomas drove the ball wide of the far upright in a later attack by Merthyr.

Twenty-five minutes had gone by when Pavey fisted out a shot by Thomas, but E.Turner on the rebound of the ball gave Merthyr the lead. Only a few minutes had elapsed following this goal when the City scored. From Kirk's well timed pass Crockford dribbled past Lindon and drove the equaliser into the net.

Half-time:
Merthyr Town 1-1 Exeter City

Five minutes after the interval Dempsey took aim from almost twenty yards out. Pavey was in readiness, but the ball swerved out of his reach and into the net. The third goal was scored near the close of play by H.W.Turner.

The sides were:

Merthyr:
Lindon; Langford, and Ferrans; E. Turner, H.Foxall, and Edwards; Thomas, H.W.Turner, Dempsey, Davies, and Abraham.

City
Pavey; Southway, and Flynn; Duke, Mitton, and Crompton;
Matthews, Kirk, Crockford, Davis, and Shelton.

Referee:- Mr J.Sayce.

Kirk and Matthews displayed good understanding on the right wing, and in defence Southway and Flynn were frequent obstacles to assertive efforts by the Merthyr forwards. Merthyr ought to have had a fourth goal near the end. Davies worked himself into a favourable shooting position, but slipped on the wet ground and scooped the ball over the bar.

RESERVES FINE WIN AT GUILDFORD

Wednesday, April 11th.

GUILDFORD UNITED 0 CITY RESERVES 3.

Exeter City Reserves sent a strong team to Guildford, and won a handsome victory by three goals to nil against the United. Play opened briskly and evenly, Pollard and Wilson stopping dangerous attacks, and in Guildford territory Mathieson drove a hard ball inches past the far upright. Fryer saved well from Smith, and in a retaliating sortie Whelpton from Mathieson.

Seventeen minutes from the start Newman broke through and gave a nice pass to Parsons, who netted. Guildford attacked with skill and vigour, Smith and Herbert proving a source of anxiety to Fryer and his colleagues.

Half-time:
Guildford 0 City Reserves 1.

Early in the second half Newman swung the ball in to Parsons, who scored Exeter's second goal, and within five minutes Dockray provided the opening from which Camble completed the trio. Exeter monopolised the remaining play but were unable to add to their total of goals.

The Reserves were represented by the following:
Fryer; Pollard, Ackroyd; Richards, Coopland, and Wilson; Newman, Camble, Parsons, Mathieson, and Dockray.
