Last of the Season

Saturday, May 5th,
at Priestfield Road, Gillingham.

Gillingham, somewhat bucked with their victory at Exeter last Saturday, were naturally optimistic with regard to today's match. Having canvassed the district very thoroughly for support to help them carry on, they were anticipating a big crowd, but only about four thousand turned up. The weather was ideal.

Gillingham: Fox; Betteridge and Robertson; Read, Henderson, and
Thompson; Battiste, Freeman, Needham, Hall, and Palmer.

City: Pavey; Pollard and Flynn; Coopland, Southway, and Crompton; Matthews, Kirk, Crockford, Davis, and Dockray.

Referee: Mr R.R.Crump, of London.

Gillingham at home beat Exeter City by the odd goal in three, both teams being at full available strength. Three minutes after the start Flynn headed the ball into his own goal, thus giving the "Hoppers" the lead. Henderson added a second point from a penalty against Southway for charging Needham unfairly.

The City forwards missed their usual quote of good openings in the second half, but Crockford reduced the arrears from a penalty against Robertson for handling. Gillingham appealed strongly for a goal when Pavey caught a shot from Needham and bounced the ball on the line, and the referee quite fairly refused the claim.

CITY RESERVES V BRIGHTON RESERVES.

Exeter City's programme for St James's Park was brought to its close this afternoon with the visit of Brighton and Hove Albion Reserves in a Southern League match.

Exeter City Reserves: Fryer; Bell and Ackroyd; Richards, Duke, and Wilson; Newman, Camble, Trowbridge, Mathieson, and Parsons.

Brighton Reserves:- Baker; Phillips and Feebery; Harvey, Cook, and Beech; Broadhead, A.Jones, Saunders, McAllister, and J.Jones.

There was special interest attached to the first appearance for the City of Archibald Trowbridge, who is 21 years of age, and who has been playing for Bristol G.W.R. The crowd were also pleased to see Jack Feebery, the burly ex-Grecian full back, in the Brighton team. Exeter City Reserves took the lead four minutes after the start, Mathieson nearly wrecking the crossbar with a full blooded drive from fifteen yards, and Camble netting the rebound.

A free kick to Brighton, thirty yards out, gave Feebery the opportunity for one of his well remembered left-footed piledrivers, but this time his shot lacked both force and direction.

Mathieson scored the City's second goal from a penalty awarded for "hands" against a Brighton defender, the ball entering the net low, in the right hand corner. A third goal accrued to the City, after 25 minutes' play, Parsons receiving from Mathieson on the middle line and running through unopposed. Jones (A) scored a goal for Brighton early in the second half,

The result at the end being
Exeter City Reserves 3 Brighton Reserves 1.

Mathieson, who played his last match for Exeter City, was captain for the day.
