Biographical Text

It is doubtful whether anyone will play as many Football League games for Exeter City as Mitchell.

Noted mainly for his defensive roles in the team, he played in every position, including taking over between the posts when the keeper was injured.

Originally on the books as an amateur with Sheffield Wednesday, he earned his first professional contract with Derby County in February 1948, but never made the first team breakthrough.

Moving on to Nottingham Forest in March 1950, and then Notts County in May 1951, he finally made his league debut when playing just once for the latter club.

It wasn’t until he signed for Exeter City in July 1952 that he won a regular berth in the team, making his debut a month later in a home fixture against Northampton Town.

Playing in a variety of positions, he eventually settled into a wing-half role and was noted for his drive and encouragement of team mates, which inevitably led him to becoming captain.

In October 1962 he was appointed Exeter City’s assistant lottery organiser and combined that role with that of playing.

Mitchell was a member of the Exeter team that won promotion for the first time in the club’s history in 1964, when he netted three goals in 38 league starts.

His career by that time was coming to an end at St James’ Park though, however, he did feature in 43 league games in 1964-65, and although linked with the manager’s job at one time, he was released on a free transfer at the end of the 1965-66 season. He had actually asked for a transfer in March 1966.

He then signed for Taunton Town and unfortunately sustained a broken leg, the first major injury of his long career.

This effectively ended his playing days, but he continued to reside in Exeter and made the occasional return visit to St James’ Park.

Mitchell, who joined the Dawlish Warren Golf Club in 1957, and represented them in various tournaments, was made a Life Member in 2011. Mitchell died in 2014.
