Exeter City v Walsall  "SADDLERS" SPRING A SURPRISE
An Unhappy Day for Exeter: Forwards Slow and Cumbersome

WALSALL 2 (Eyres A. Walters)
Half-time 0-1.

Referee:- Mr W.G. Austin.

Brilliant summer weather and cast-iron grounds were the lot of footballers again today. St James's Park was no exception to the rule. The turf is dry and baking brown under the influence day after day of this hot September weather, and the ground is as hard as the pavement. Walsall, led by Helliwell, were the first to appear, and their colours and design reminded the older City followers of the great days of the Cup games with Aston Villa, many years ago. Mason won the toss, and the City formed up at the St James's Road end, with the advantage of the sun and light breeze. The attendance was 7,000. Wallsall sprang a big surprise on Exeter City today by the smartness which they displayed in setting about their task once the starting signal had been given. Eyres opened the scoring five minutes before the interval, and Walters with the second goal completed it five minutes from the finish. The City forwards were slow and cumbersome, and their policy of close passing did not pay. McDevitt, in particular, had a very unhappy game, and Hemingway made several mistakes. Henderson's enthusiasm was creditable but he is lacking in craft, and the only forwards who justified their selection were Purcell and Death. McMullan, Mason, and Alderson were Exeter's outstanding players.
