EASTER MONDAY:
CITY v WATFORD

Big Crowd at St. James's Park

Exeter City, following their meritorious victories at Watford and Crystal Palace, were hoping to register a "hat-trick" of Easter successes at St James's Park this afternoon, April 22nd, when the return match with Watford was played.

ADDRESS BY LORD MAMHEAD.

Nine thousand followers of Exeter City Football Club listened to an encouraging Easter message from Lord Mamhead. Speaking through the microphone, his Lordship, who was introduced by Mr A. Wills, said he proposed informing people the exact position of the club from A to Z. He proposed to deal with the position under three headings, past, present, and future. In the past the club had met with a rather serious crisis, but he begged supporters not to criticise adversely. When they considered the amount of money at the club's disposal the management could be said to have done well. But a crisis had arisen, and the budget could not be balanced. Lord Mamhead went on to pay tribute to the Emergency Committee and recalled how a local sportsman had loaned £7,000 on mortgage, to secure the ground for at least ten years; how bondholders had con verted securities amounting to £4,500 into shares, and in addition how just over £5,000 had been promised in additional share capital.

Comradeship in Sport.

The Emergency Committee had worked like Trojans in the short time they had at their disposal, and there now remained to be gathered in a further £2,000 from sportsmen not only in the city, but the county as well. His Lordship was sure that the money would not be long in forthcoming. There is, he said, a wonderful comradeship in sport, and football especially brought together all sections of the community besides brightening the lives of thousands of working men. Dealing with the newly formed Supporters' Club, he said it would in time prove to be a valuable asset, and its membership was expected to reach the 1,000 mark very shortly.

  • The new Supporters Club flag was then unveiled by Mr H.Greenaway.
Very nearly the biggest crowd of the season, there being about ten thousand people present when the teams appeared, saw Watford win the toss. Exeter recalled Hurst, who played at outside right in place of Clarke.

Midway through the first half Scott was carried off by the Exeter trainer and the St John Ambulance men. He had cut his head rather badly while colliding heavily with Woodward. Watford had a narrow escape when a shot from McArthur was punched on to the crossbar by McLaren, with none of the Exeter forwards in position to get to the rebound. A big cheer greeted Scott's return, with his head heavily bandaged. He resumed at outside right with Hurst inside. The game was slow on account of the sticky state of the ground, and at half time neither side had been able to score. Exeter took the lead soon after the restart when a corner kick by Tierney landed right in the goalmouth. The Watford defence failed to clear, and McArthur from an easy position drove the ball high into the net. Lane equalised with a header from Devan's centre, and in the closing stages Watford were the stronger and better side.
Result:- Exeter City 1 Watford 1.
