Saturday, September 19th.
EXETER CITY 2 LUTON TOWN 4.

Though beaten by four goals to two Exeter City were not disgraced in a thrilling game at St James's Park today. They were not such a polished combination as Luton, but they were a team of earnest and willing triers who never gave up. The margin of victory flattered the visitors, for their goal bore a charmed life in the last twenty minutes. The ball did not run kindly for Exeter, who at no time played like a beaten team, and their final rally was the feature of a grand and sporting game. C. Smith in his first senior game showed a good turn of speed, and knows how to beat a man with the ball, but was prone to centre too diagonally or else shoot behind the goal. Williams was an energetic leader, and Tom Scott, who captained the City, the most skilful forward.

Within four minutes Exeter City, for whom McGill and Urmson began brightly on the left wing, took the lead, Williams meeting and converting Urmson's low pass into the goalmouth. Six minutes later Scott further improved the position by scoring Exeter's second goal. Exeter City's lead, however, was not to go unchallenged, and when Roberts retrieved a ball which appeared to be running over the line and placed it into the goalmouth Payne was there to meet it and score. Soon afterwards a clever interchange of passes between Stephenson and Roberts gave Payne his second and equalising goal. Exeter had the majority of the play subsequently, but they lost several good openings through the inability of C. Smith to get the ball into the centre properly. A breakaway by the Luton forwards resulted in them going ahead by three goals to two. Stephenson scored this goal with a rising shot from a very narrow angle. Three minutes later Bell placed the game beyond Exeter's recovery when he headed in Hodge's centre. The remainder of the time was fought out in the Luton Town half of the field. Exeter's forwards hit the posts three times, and Dolman, who saved numerous shots from Williams and his colleagues, was the saviour of his side. The attendance numbered 8,000.
