Torquay United (a)

Wednesday, November 11th.
SOUTHERN SECTION CUP
THIRD ROUND
Torquay United v Exeter City

The Southern Section Cup-tie at Plainmoor on Wednesday afternoon was the third meeting between Torquay and the Grecians, who had won both the previous matches. Exeter experimented with Young at inside left and Pollard in the half back line. Hobbs deputised for Angus at centre half. Eddie McArthur, last year a Grecian, was at outside left for Torquay.

EXETER CITY Tierney Brown Boyle Pollard Hobbs Shadwell Keane Johnson Williams Young Urmson.

The game opened sensationally on a rain-swept pitch, Exeter making a swift raid and taking the lead in the first minute. Keane and Johnson advanced from midfield and the Torquay defence was drawn out of position. Keane middled the ball low, and Maggs hesitated when several yards out of his goal. Williams snapped up Keane's pass and netted with a swift ground shot. With the rain streaming down and the playing field a morass, good football was impossible, and anything could have happened on such a day. McArthur missed badly for Torquay, shooting tamely wide of the goal with only Tierney to beat. Shortly after this, however, Torquay equalised, Morton driving the ball hard into the net from McArthur's corner kick. The United were now having the better of the play, and they took the lead eight minutes before the interval. Morton veered out to the right and after dribbling past all opposition crossed the ball for Morgan to score from close range. The second half was played at a fast pace considering the weather and ground conditions, and ended in semi-darkness.
Result:-
Torquay United 2 Exeter City 1.
