CITY'S LAST HOPE FLICKERS OUT RE-ELECTION TO BE APPLIED FOR FINISHING BLUNDERS IN VITAL MATCH: EQUALISER COMES LATE CARDIFF AND WALSALL BOTH WIN

Exeter City 1 Swindon Town 1.

The sacrifice of a home point which would have proved invaluable in the struggle to avoid re-election disappointed the spectators at St James's Park to-day. Exeter City and Swindon shared two goals, and this was a fair and correct result of a match which was on the whole dull and lifeless. Little good football was seen, and although Exeter held most of the advantage territorially their movements lacked cohesion and guile, and many blunders were made in the matter of finishing.

City: Tierney; Brown, Stimpson; Clarke, Angus, Shadwell; F.Smith, Bussey, Williams, McGill, Owen.
Swindon:- Wildman; Duckworth, Smith; Cousins, Morrall, Wilcockson; Jones, Fowler, Cookson, Musgrave, Hetherington.
Referee:- Mr F.W.Reeve, of Devonport.

Inability to make a first-time pass accurately was one of Exeter's most glaring faults. Players required too long in which to make up their minds, and in consequence the Swindon defence remained the masters of the situation. Considering the importance of this match to Exeter, with the need for applying for re-election now almost a certainty, there should have been a livelier display. On their best form the City could have won this game with ease. As it turned out, however, they were a long way removed from their highest standard this afternoon. The team seldom impressed in a combined sense. Most of the efforts were of the scrambling and ragged order. The trouble was not with the backs or the goalkeeper. The principal defects were concerned with the half-back line, where Angus alone inspired confidence. In the attack little semblance of combination was shown. Between three and four thousand spectators saw an early attack by Swindon beaten back when Angus checked Cookson, the old Plymouth Argyle centre-forward. When the Town raided again, this time on the right wing, Brown headed away a centre from Jones. Morrall started another Swindon advance which culminated with the ball being netted by Cookson from Fowler's pass, but to the relief of Exeter City and their supporters the goal was disallowed on the grounds of offside.

A LEGITIMATE GOAL.
Swindon, although having less of the play than Exeter, were a more dangerous side in breakaways, and twenty minutes after the start they took the lead with a legitimate goal, scored by Fowler. Brown's coolness in defence saved Exeter twice in the last quarter of an hour of the game, then Williams nodded into the net a centre from Smith to equalise.

With Cardiff City and Walsall both winning today, the question of who will occupy the 21st position in the final League table rests between the City, Newport County, and Torquay. With both Torquay and Newport having two matches left, and Exeter only one, it appears that the City's last faint hope of avoiding an application for re-election has now flickered out.

CITY AND TORQUAY WILL POSSIBLY REPLAY NEXT SEASON

EXETER CITY 1 TORQUAY UNITED 1.

Final is Too Late

Exeter City and Torquay United failed to decide the final of their Devon Championship game at St James's Park on Wednesday evening, when each side scored one goal. The latest suggestion is that the clubs will possibly meet again at Plainmoor early next season. Once more it was obvious that a mistake was made in shelving this competition to so late a stage in the season. The primary object of it is to raise money for the Devon County F. A. funds, yet the matches have been played at a time when interest is at its lowest ebb.

TORQUAY UNITED

Philbin, the smartest forward on view, scored for Torquay in the first half with a low shot which rebounded into the net off the upright. Urmson's equalising goal, just after the interval, was a highlight in an otherwise uninspiring match. Urmson gained possession in the centre of the field, worked slightly away from the goal to dribble past three Torquay defenders and then swung round to beat Joslin with a terrific left-footer from about fifteen yards.
