Match 29
29th January 1938
Gillingham (a)

Southern League
Guildford (h)

GILLINGHAM 2 EXETER CITY 1.

Saturday, January 29th 1938. at Priestfield Road, Gillingham.
Attendance 5,000.

Although a couple of goals in arrears at the interval the City improved considerably in the second half. But there was a lack of balance and punch near goal. Pollard's inclusion at centre-half has not solved the defensive problem, and Brown and Wallace were often overworked. Church made many daring saves, and both Angus and Shadwell did well, especially in their constructive work. As regards the forwards the City had little to complain of, in approach work. Bowl led the line admirably, and McGill got through an immense amount of work without meeting with great success. Liddle, Bussey, and Coulston, often seen to advantage in their midfield efforts, faded out badly near goal.

EXETER CITY

Gillingham, aided by a strong wind in the first half, pressed, and Fishlock scored after 15 minutes. Play remained mostly at the Exeter end, and after 28 minutes the Hoppers were rewarded with a second goal, scored by Herbert. Coulston seven minutes after the resumpation of play in the second half obtained Exeter's goal.

Southern League
