Biographical Text

Alan Brown had a short spell with Exeter City during the second half of the 1961/62 season. He joined the club from Brighton and Hove Albion and later played for Dover and Hastings United.

Alan had been playing for Sussex non-league club Portslade when he was given a chance to join Brighton and Hove Albion in September 1958 where he went on to feature in seven league matches and score twice.

When former Brighton player Glen Wilson took over as player-manager at Exeter City, and with the side struggling for goals, he returned to his former club to sign Alan in January 1962. Making his Exeter debut in a 4-3 home win over Stockport County on 6 January Alan started well by netting the opening goal of the game and went on to score twice more that season against Crewe Alexandra and Bradford City.

But with Glen Wilson leaving St James' Park in April 1962, Alan was soon on his way signing first for Dover and then Hastings United. Working later as a landscape gardener,  Alan Brown died in Lewes on 12 February 2016 aged 78.

[Alan's brother Irvin played in the Football League for Brighton and Bournemouth.]
