J Cann played for St Sidwell's United in local football before the club became Exeter City in 1904.

He did not have many first-team oportunities because of the form of Robinson, the regular St Sidwell's goalkeeper. 

When the club became Exeter City in 1904 he continued to play for the reserves and also appeared in the public trial match at St James' Park on 2 September 1905.
