Biographical Text

Hugh Whelan played twice for Exeter City early in the 1923/24 season having signed from Bradford City.

Scottish-born Hugh commenced his professional career with Bradford City in 1922 but did not make a league appearance during his single season at Valley Parade. Arriving at St James’ Park in the summer of 1923, he quickly made his Football League debut in the opening fixture at Newport County on 25 August 1923. Absent for the next three matches, he made his second and final first-team appearance for the Grecians against Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic on 8 September 1923. 

There is no record of him playing any further football after this time.
