2004
Mark Ellis

Born Kingsbridge 30 September 1988

Mark was with the Exeter City under-15 development squad in 2003/04 and with the under-16s the following season. When still aged sixteen Mark was signed by Bolton Wanderers around the time he was leaving school.

The same April 2006 transfer tribunal settled the amounts due for both Mark's move to Bolton and Jamie Hatch's move to Southampton in similar circumstances. In Mark's case the terms were:

Exeter will receive £90,000 immediately, £100,000 after 10 appearances, £100,000 after 20 appearances, £100,000 after 30 appearances, £100,000 after 40 appearances, £10,000 after first England Under-21 appearance, £100,000 after first full England appearance, plus a 15% sell-on premium.

After joining as a trainee Mark later signed a professional deal and told the Express and Echo that

"Hopefully next season I will carry on playing for Bolton's reserves and go out on loan for a taste of first-team football. I haven't any regrets about leaving Exeter, I moved on to develop my career but they helped me get where I am now."

In September 2007 Mark moved back to Devon to join Torquay United on loan. Having not made a first-team appearance at Bolton, Mark signed permanently for Torquay in 2008 and was with the Plainmoor club as they were promoted back to the Football League and challenged for further promotions in 2011 and 2012. He also had a loan stint at Forest Green Rovers in 2009/10.

Mark rejected a new Torquay contract in 2012 and signed for League One Crewe Alexandra with whom he won the Football League Trophy.

Mark was released by Crewe in summer 2014 and joined Shrewsbury Town. After featuring regularly in Shropshire, Mark fell out-of-favour and moved to Carlisle on loan before signing a permanent deal at Brunton Park. Once at Carlisle, Mark spent further loan periods at Forest Green Rovers (again) and Leyton Orient.

Mark was to leave Carlsle at the end of 2017/18 moving next to Tranmere Rovers where, over a three-year stay, he played reletively few first-team  games. His stay on the Wirral included yet another loan, this time at Notts County.

Mark's next stop was Barrow where he signed a two-year deal in summer 2021 rejoining Mark Cooper who had been his manager at Forest Green Rovers. Mark failed to establish himself at Holker Street and was subsequently loaned to Solihull Moors (2021/22), Torquay United (2022/23) and - for the concluding stages of 2022/23 - York City.

At ths stage Mark had played well over 400 games at a dozen clubs since leaving Exeter City and soon added to the total with a switch to Chorley ahead of the 2023/24 season .
