Marshall

Biographical Text

A player called Marshall only appears once in the annals of St Sidwell’s United, the club that later became Exeter City in 1904. Although it is possible it may have been his only game for St Sidwell’s United, he may also have been the club’s first goalscorer.

Appearing in the opening friendly against Dawlish on 21 September 1901, his name is recorded first amongst the list of goalscorers. There is no record of him thereafter suggesting that he may have ordinarily played for other clubs in the area or had been lent by the opposition.

[1901 census possibilities include Edgar Marshall (18), an engineering apprentice, and John Marshall (20), a scholastic books canvasser, both living in St Thomas].
