He played as an outside left in the practice game on the 17th August 1935, having made a scoring debut for Exeter City at Bath City on the 4th of May 1935.

He played for the reserves in the Southern League and the Exeter and District league in 1935/36.

Cannan played as a winger for the reserves in 1935, he is pictured in the squad photo in 1935, but did not play for the first team.
