Grecians Win at Cassio Road:

This afternoon Exeter City were engaged in a Southern League match at Watford. Ordinarily this would not have been regarded as one of the Grecians' most serious tasks, but Watford have been doing remarkable things of late, for example, beating Coventry by no fewer than seven goals to nil, and going to the Millwall ground at New Cross and drawing with the redoubtable "Lions". Watford's success dated from the time the amateur, G.W.Edmonds, came into the team at centre-forward in place of McLaughlan, the old Arsenal player, who has been injured.

Today the Watford management were expected to rely upon the side which drew at Millwall, while the Exeter selectors had picked the eleven which beat Merthyr so decisively last Wednesday, with the proviso that Fort should play if his injury had mended. The forward line, therefore, again included E.Lewis, the amateur, and McCann, who scored the City's first goal of the season. Marshall, it is worthy of note, had succeeded in keeping his place at left-half.

Exeter arrived at Watford an hour before the start, having come from Paddington by motor charabanc. Shortly after their arrival at Cassio Road rain began to fall, making a big difference to the gate. The City were first out, and among the three thousand spectators were a good number of Devonians, living in London. Watford looked smart in their white shirts, andappeared to be a heavier side than the City. Stewart won the toss and Brooksbank kicked offup the slope with a drizzle of rain blowing across the field.

Watford at once attacked and a long forward pass went over the goal-line. In the next move Carr centred for Pym to save a drive by Green. The City then made an incursion on the left wing, but McCann scooped the ball over the bar. Watford then got back to Exeter's end again, and Dryden beat Strettle and tried a grounder which went harmlessly wide.

The best shot so far, however, came from Marshall, who skimmed the Watford crossbar with a drive from fully thirty yards. Rigby next passed to Brooksbank, but the centre-forward was halted for offside. A free-kick was given to Watford close to the City's penalty area, and Dryden, with a smart header, missed by inches only, with Pym going headlong across his line. Up to now Watford had done most of the attacking, but they found Exeter's defence to be in a very defiant mood. The rain had now stopped.

Narrow Escapes at Both Ends.

Brooksbank showed the halves a clean pair of heels, and Webster ran out and kicked to touch just in time. Val Gregory was stopped by Rigby, and for two or three minutes Webster's goal was under heavy pressure from the lively Exeter forwards, with Lee playing better than ever before this season. Eventually the Grecians were driven back by Bulling, and Carr, who is only seventeen years old, was prominent on Watford's left wing.

At the other end Lewis steered a bee-line between the backs, and Webster had to be at his best to save, while directly afterwards Whittaker gave the custodian a powerful cross drive, which he held with difficulty, and indeed, might well have been excused for letting such a shot through. Bulling was winded in a tussle with McCann and had to retire, whereupon Pantlingdropped back in defence. In the meantime Whittaker was pulled up for offside, and following the free-kick Green failed badly with only Pym to beat. Bulling returned to the field after a short absence, but the City continued to attack, and Lewis spoiled a nice forward movement by shooting weakly and yards wide of the target. Harding miskicked, and nearly put the ball through his own goal, and in subsequent play Lee centred to Lewis, who lost a fine chance through being too slow. There had been narrow escapes at both ends, with Exeter generally having the best of matters, but the crowd's anger was aroused by Harding, who barged into Edmonds and laid him out. The free kick was taken by Fred Gregory, who lobbed the ball into the goalmouth, and Pym saved Carr's header in excellent style.

Half-time arrived with nothing on the scoreboard, but twenty minutes or so after the restart the City made one of their fast raids along the right wing, with Whittaker in possession. Stewart came out to meet him, and the two players collided, but in the scramble which ensued the Exeter man slipped the ball forward to the left. It was beyond Brooksbank's reach and was going straight to McCann. Fred Gregory lunged forward towards McCann, who jumped over the ball and allowed it to go to Lee, who promptly shot into the net well wide of the goalkeeper.

Dryden had two chances to save the game for Watford in the last fifteen minutes, but failed with both. The first time he rattled the crossbar with a crashing shot, and the second time, after he had beaten three men and facing only Pym, he screwed the leather wide.

Final score:  Watford 0-1 Exeter City

CITY RESERVES v GORDON HIGHLANDERS.

The Reserves met the Gordon Highlanders in a Plymouth League match at St. James's Park, Exeter, this afternoon. The visitors, who are recent arrivals at Plymouth, were playing their first game in the League. They are at present the holders of the Army Cup.

City Reserves:- Loram; Hunt, Goddard; Smith, Lagan, Evans; Holt, Lovett, Budd, Kirby, and Orr.

Gordon Highlanders:- Sutherland; McGeechan, Hunter; Elliot, Purdon, Thomson; Hugieson, Cairns, Williamson, Forster, and Davidson.

The visitors kicked off, but the Reserves were the first to be dangerous, and Sutherland saved a long shot from Smith. A corner was gained by Exeter on the right, from which Lovett sent wide. After twenty minutes' play two corners fell to Exeter in quick succession, and from the second, finely placed by Orr, the ball was headed into the net by Lovett. The visitors then broke away, but Hunt intercepted a pass, and ran through to score with a fine individual effort, putting the City two up. Further goals, by Holt and Kirby, accrued to Exeter, who had had practically the whole of the play.

Half Time
City 4-0 Gordon Highlanders

Play continued in the same vein after the change of ends, and Kirby scored the fifth goal after he and Lovett had previously missed from good positions. At the other end Loram touched the ball for the first time during the match. Lovett scored the sixth goal with a good shot, and Kirby the seventh with Sutherland yards out of his charge after rushing out to save from Holt. Evans hit the bar with a good shot, the ball bouncing out again to be cleared by Hunter, and the final whistle came with the score:

City Reserves 7, Highlanders 0.
