WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1ST.

Exmouth United v Exeter City.

With a view to fostering the Association game at Exmouth and assisting the funds of the local club, Exeter sent a League team there to play a friendly. Exmouth have not been beaten this season in competition football, and they were expected to make at least some amends for the recent drubbing the City inflicted on them in a friendly at St. James's Park. The afternoon was beautifully fine, and it was not surprising to find a very good "gate." The peculiarities of the ground at Cranford prevented Exeter's professionals giving an exhibition of their best work, but after McCann had headed a centre from Holt over the bar, and then tried to dribble through the whole Exmouth team instead of parting with the ball, the City at last settled down, Brooksbank and Evans both scoring before the interval.

In the second half goals were added by Goodwin, McCann, and Marshall, the final score being:-

Exeter City 5, Exmouth nil.

SATURDAY, APRIL 4TH.

Queen's Park Rangers v City

SENSATIONAL WIN BY THE GRECIANS

Exeter City appeared today at Park Royal, where they encountered the Rangers for Southern League points. This fixture was set aside by the Rangers for the benefit of Mitchell and Macdonald, though only one of the beneficiaries (Mitchell) was playing today. This is the second time in recent weeks that the Grecians have provided the opposition at a benefit match, the other time being when Tooth, of Brighton, was guaranteed £150 of the gate on the occasion of the City's visit to Goldstone Road on March 14th.

RANGERS:- Nicholls; Ovens, Pullen; Whyman, Mitchell, Wake; Thompson, Birch, Miller, Gregory, Ives.

CITY:- Pym; Fort, Strettle; Rigby, Lagan, Smith; Holt, Lovett, Whittaker, McCann, Goodwin.

REFEREE:- Mr. J. H. Gettins, of Liverpool.

The City team, with Mr. George Middleweek, the director, in charge, left St. David's at 10-15 this morning, and arrived at Paddington two hours before the start. Rain was falling when the Grecians got to London, and they reached the Park Royal ground three quarters of an hour before kick-off time. The pitch was very slippery on the surface, and in several placesthere were big bare patches. A crowd of about six thousand was present at the start, and it was evident that the showery weather had affected the attendance.

The Game.

The City defeated Queen's Park Rangers by three goals to two, yet were two down at the interval. Rigby won the toss, but the Rangers immediately made play on the right, and Pym had to run out of his goal and clear from Liner. Holt got going for Exeter, but a neat pass to McCann was not taken advantage of, Ovens intercepting the ball and clearing his lines. Play then centred round the City goal, and Fort showed up well with two good clearances.

After Lovett had just missed with a header Whymanintervened and sent the ball forward to 'hiller, whose efforts at goal getting were nullified by Fort. Nicholls saved from Lovett, and Ives gathered the ball from the goalkeeper's clearance and carried play to the Exeter end. His square centre brought about the downfall of the City's goal, for Strettle got to the ball but ballooned it, and Pym had to punch out, whereupon Birch secured the leather and netted. This came after 30 minutes' play. Exeter made a determined effort to equalise, and a. shot from McCann was followed by a smart run by Holt, but each time the ball was scrambled away from danger. Goodwin struck the side of the net, but when play was transferred biller put his side further ahead, about five minutes before the interval. Just before half-time Holt netted, but was offside.

Rangers 2, Exeter City nil.

Second half.

With a two-goal deficit Exeter resumed strongly, and after four minutes Whittaker scored. The credit for the goal belonged first to McCann for drawing the defence, and then to Whittaker for the power and accuracy of his shot, which had Nicholls beaten to the wide.

The exchanges in this half were mostly in favour of the Rangers, and Pym saved brilliantly from Gregory. Eventually Goodwin put in a fine run, having been given a perfect pass by McCann, and from the winger's pass Whittaker equalised with 13 minutes remaining. The pace seemed to be telling on the home forwards, and Exeter played with commendable dash and spirit, although Pym was forced to a fine save by Wake's shot, which he punched over the bar. End to end play predominated for several minutes, and in a rush to the Rangers' quarters Lovett put the City ahead with a lovely goal. The move began with Fort giving Holt a long swinging pass, a smart run and a lightning transfer to Lovett followed, and the outcome was the ball in the back of the Rangers' net. With only two minutes left for play, it is scarcely necessary to add that Lovett and Holt were "mobbed" by their delighted colleagues, for the City had pulled the game out of the fire and won a sensational victory on a ground where they had never before been successful, and this, after losing two goals before the interval.

CITY 3 RANGERS2

  • Last season: Rangers 2 City 1.
  • In 1911-12: Rangers 0 City 0.

Notes on the Game.

The success of Exeter City at Park Royal was more the result of opportunism by the forwards than any marked superiority over their opponents. The rearrangement of the Exonianvanguard was fully justified, the inclusion of Lovett and Goodwin serving to speed up the attack, while that of Whittaker added strength and power in the matter of shooting. Rigby, Lagan, and Smith were also in fine form, although at times lacking that measure of anticipation necessary in the making of a good half-back line. They were well covered by Strettle and Fort, however, apart from the former's mistake which led up to the Ranger's second goal, and Pym, who made at least three saves of high class, was his usual dependable self. The Rangers' forwards, however, had many more chances than the Exeter ones, but lost them by dallying in front of goal. Today's victory was Exeter's finest since the Pompey Cup-tie.

PLYMOUTH AND DISTRICT LEAGUE.

City Reserves v Torpoint.

Played at St. James's Park. The Grecians were vastly superior, but so fine was the Torpoint defence that only one goal was scored in the first half, by Walker, two minutes before the interval. Subsequently Exeter Reserves controlled the game, apart from a few isolated raids by Pegler and Pound, and further goals accrued from Pratt, with a header, and Evans, from a free-kickafter Pratt had "dummied" the defence by jumping over the ball. Final score:-Exeter City Reserves 3 Torpoint nil.

Reserves:- Loram; Harding, bunt; Marshall, Pratt, Evans; Walker, Brooksbank, Rose, Lewis, Orr.

Torpoint:- Hancock; Bodel, Rounsevell; Coleman, Tustin, Lang; Horton, Croft, Jeffrey, Pound, Pegler.
