Match 36
15th April 1914
Merthyr (a)

EXETER BEATEN AT MERTHYR.

Only the excellent goalkeeping of Pym saved Exeter City from a heavier defeat than 1-nil, the margin by which they were beaten, at Merthyr before a crowd of eight thousand spectators. Merthyr had a far greater share of the game than the score suggests, and it does seem likely that Exeter are never going to win against a Welsh club.

The City forwards gave Burrows a few difficult shots to handle at times, but nothing was scored until ten minutes from the finish, when Kirby, who began the season as Exeter's captain, kicked the only goal for Merthyr Town, who thus gained two valuable points in their struggle to escape relegation. The bottom positions on the League table are now held by Watford (27 points), Merthyr (25), and Coventry (23), each of these clubs having two games left to play before the end of the season. Exeter and Merthyr both made changes for today's match, Harding, Brooksbank, and Marshall reappearing in the City side for Fort, Whittaker, and Goodwin, while in the Merthyr eleven McCormack and Metcalf took over from White and Craig.

The referee was Mr Baker, who was in charge of the Devon derby at St James's Park on Monday.

Teams:

Merthyr:- Burrows; McCormack, Russell; Metcalf, Gates, Churchill; Stuart, Kirby, Miller, Lawrence, Tattum.

City:- Pym; Harding, Strettle; Rigby, Pratt, Smith; Holt, Lovett, Brooksbank, McCann, Marshall.
