Clive Stafford

DEFENDER
89/90 LEAGUE APPEARANCES: TWO

Clive Stafford was a latecomer to the professional game, who quickly found himself playing his small part in City’s title campaign.

Clive was 25-years-old before he got a chance at Football League level, being signed by Colchester United from Diss Town in February 1989.

He went on to feature in 33 league games for the club, and also played one game on trial at West Bromwich Albion.

With City needing cover in the defensive positions, Clive was brought in on loan in February 1990, and made his debut in the 3-2 defeat away to Cambridge United.

His performance in the game was described as ‘unremarkable’ by the Express & Echo’s Trina Lake, but Clive was selected again to start in the following match away at Carlisle.

Once again, City fell to a defeat, and Clive’s brief spell at the club was ended almost as soon as it had began when he was brought off and replaced by Lee Rogers on the 75th minute mark.

Returning to Colchester, Clive was released by the club and signed for Bury Town in the summer of 1990.

He was to later play for Sudbury Town in 1992 where he stayed for six years, helping to promotion to the Southern League Premier Division in 1993/94.
