Kevin Summerfield
MIDFIELDER
89/90 LEAGUE APPEARANCES: FOUR
Kevin Summerfield was another one of the lesser-known players – at least in this part of Devon - who played a brief role for the Grecians on route to the title.
Kevin began his career with West Bromwich Albion in 1977, but only made a total of nine league appearances - scoring three goals - before joining Birmingham City in May 1982.
His stay at St Andrews lasted just seven months, as he left for his hometown club Walsall where he enjoyed a successful 18 months spell, scoring 17 league goals that led to a transfer to Cardiff City in July 1984.
This time he stayed just six months, but his move to Plymouth Argyle in December 1984 saw him put down roots, as he stayed with the Pilgrims for the next five years.
Unfortunately a broken leg sustained in January 1989 led to a year on the sidelines, and so to regain match-fitness he was loaned to City in March 1990.
Kevin made his debut in the number six shirt, as City smashed Rochdale 5-0 at the Park to record the biggest league win of the season, and made a further three appearances against Scunthorpe, Hereford and York.
Kevin moved to Shrewsbury Town in October 1990, but returned to Home Park in 1997 where over the years he has worked on and off in many roles as a member of the management and coaching team.
