Biographical Text
After playing in junior football in the Sheffield area for Woodhouse, William joined Barnsley in 1919, where he appeared in five league matches. He also played in an FA Cup giant killing in the First round on January 10th 1920 in front of an Attendance of 32,000, when Barnsley beat First Division West Bromwich Albion 1-0.
A member of Exeter City’s first ever Football League squad in 1920-21, Lakin made his debut for the Grecians in a 2-0 defeat at Newport County in October 1920.
He was to spend just one season at St James’ Park, them moving back to Yorkshire to join Doncaster Rovers in 1921.
It is possible that William was killed in an explosion at Barnsley Main Colliery on the 16th February 1942.
