After wartime military service in India, Bristolian Charlie Vowles joined Exeter City just in time to play in the club's first-ever Football League match against Brentford in August 1920. Scoring in the game, he staked a regular place in the team and finished joint top-scorer with nine goals. Again topping the list of scorers with eleven in 1921/22 he later played for Boston Town, Barrow and Scunthorpe & Lindsey United.

Charlie had played football for the Army in India during the First World War and was part of a regimental team that won the All-India Football Shield. Having taken part in the British Army's final cavalry charge, Charlie joined Exeter City in August 1920 and scored in the club's first-ever Football League game against Brentford on 28 August 1920. He became top-scorer in both 1920/21 (nine goals) and 1921/22 (when he netted 11 times in the league).

Having now made 54 league appearances for City with 20 goals, Charlie failed to score in the ten league games he played at the start of the 1922/23 campaign and moved to Boston Town in December 1922. Returning to the Football League with Barrow in 1925/26, Charlie moved after a year to join Scunthorpe & Lindsey United where he scored 32 goals in a single season ahead of later stints with Newark Town and Ilkeston Town.

Charlie died on 24 October 1965 in Bristol.
