Biographical Text
Having played for Plank Lane (near Leigh), Lancashire-born Jim Carrick was one of manager Arthur Chadwick's new recruits when Exeter City joined the Football League in 1920. Appearing in the club's first-ever Football League match against Brentford, he missed just one league game in 1920/21 before joining Oldham Athletic. He subsequently appeared for a number of clubs in the North of England before having a spell with Torquay United in the late 1920s.
On signing for Exeter City for the start of the 1920/21 season, Jim was described as a ‘Lancashire lad of promise; the big centre-half’s future is bright but he realises he has plenty yet to learn’. It was his first season in senior football with his experience to date having been in the Leigh and District League and with Plank Lane in the Lancashire Combination.
Jim's debut for Exeter City was in the club’s first ever game in the Football League against Brentford at St James’ Park. He only missed one league match all season - scoring three times from defence - but, at the end of the campaign, he was on the move to sign for Oldham Athletic.
Thereafter Jim played for a number of clubs including Stockport County in 1923, Barrow (1924), Bradford Park Avenue (1926), Accrington Stanley (1927) and Torquay United where he made 29 Football League appearances during 1928/29.
