1995-96 From the Express and Echo
The ship steadied
NEW boss Peter Fox set about attempting to reverse five years of turmoil. The popular goalkeeper - Player of-the-Year in each of his two seasons with the club, achieved relative success on a shoestring budget and against a backdrop of limited expectation. City were among the play-off places by the beginning of October before the inevitable slide into mid-table.
But, after the trouble of the previous season, the future looked much brighter - City putting their finances back on an even keel and agreeing a deal with Exeter City Council that safeguarded the future of St James's Park.
THE CLIMAX
EXETER were never in relegation trouble and achieved a fine 14th spot after a 2-0 last-day defeat at Preston. Many City fans, who had travelled to celebrate an improved term, were locked out as an amazing 18,700 crowd packed into Deepdale.
