Saturday, February 10th 1912.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
EXETER CITY 3 MILLWALL 1.
Last season: Millwall 2 City 1.
In 1909-10: City 5 Millwall 0.
Exeter City were at home to Millwall this afternoon in a Southern League match, and it will be remembered that Millwall beat Exeter earlier this season, in London, by no fewer than five goals to nil. This heavy defeat still rankles, and the Grecians' supporters were hopeful that revenge would be taken this afternoon, especially as the match followed an excellent performance put up at Park Royal last Saturday.
The drying wind of last night and the bright sunshine this morning had greatly improved the pitch, but it was still "as soft as a pudding" in places, and likely to cut up. And the goalposts at the far end were still in the "short distance" position.
CITY: W.Whittaker Fort Evans Rigby Bassett Lockett E. Whittaker Watson Rutter Cornan Garside
Referee: Mr G.E. Johnson, of Chelmsford.
Linesmen: Messrs J.Wiltshire and F.H.Curtis.
MILLWALL: Joel Jeffrey Kirkwood Liddell Wilson Voisey Lipsham Vincent Davis Carvossa Morris
A start was arranged for ten past three, and Millwall were out early, Joel, like Whittaker, wearing a red jersey. The crowd were still rolling in at the kick-off, and there was every promise of a good "gate". Jeffrey won the toss and put Exeter to face the sun. The City at once went through, and Joel saved on his line. Bassett dispossessed Carvossa, and punted up the field, and Rutter gave E.Whittaker a nice pass, but the young winger slipped and shot wide. Fort twice made timely interceptions to prevent Millwall getting through, and from a free-kick against E. Whittaker the ball went over the touch-line. Garside cut in towards goal and shot, but Joel saved with ease, and threw the ball to Kirkwood, who passed to Wilson. Fort again came to Exeter's rescue by effecting a good tackle on Lipsham, who had made ground from Wilson's pass.
Stroke of Good Luck.
Five minutes later Whittaker scored a remarkable goal. He nursed the ball along near the touch-line, and then put across a square centre. It looked to be going right in front of the goalposts, but suddenly swerved inward, hit the upright, and rebounded into the net, Joel standing aghast, and the City players embracing Whittaker in their delight at this stroke of good luck. Exeter continued to rule the roost, and following a corner from the left wing Jeffrey nearly put through his own goal. Instead he gave away another corner, and the ball was centred to Lockett, who scored the second goal amid great cheering from the crowd, now numbering about five thousand.
Bassett Scores.
For a change Whittaker (Walter) was given something to do, but it was only to run across his line as Carvossa's shot went behind. Cornan tried a shot with a volley, which was several yards wide and too high, then a tussle between E. Whittaker and Jeffrey resulted in the Millwall skipper giving away one. more corner. Whittaker placed the ball perfectly and Bassett scored with a very similar type of shot to Lockett's, Joel having no chance. Three goals before half-time was a welcome change in Exeter's fortunes, and the crowd was buzzing with excitement. Lockett was speedy and safe, and finally checked Morris in an isolated raid by Millwall. Rutter missed the goal by about eighteen inches after a dashing dribble by Cornan, and Rutter was back again in the next minute worrying Kirkwood, but was pulled up for a foul.
Half-time: City 3 Millwall nil.
The visitors tried hard to make headway after the interval, and Davis was lectured by the referee for being too rough. Cornan dropped the ball on to the top of the rigging from Garside's centre, and at the Exeter end Davis shot wide from twelve yards out. Whittaker and Rigby were both victims of bad fouls which the referee chose to ignore, and Davis was again very aggressive, and received a second rebuke from the referee. Evans was roused to retaliation against Davis, and in this and several other incidents Millwall showed that they were taking their beating in very bad grace. However, with the wind behind them Millwall improved upon their first-half display as regards football, and the Exeter goal had several escapes. Ten minutes from the close a mistake by Evans let Davis through, and the centre-forward went on to draw W.Whittaker out, and slip the ball into the net.
COMMENTS.
The situation has been further improved, and the gap between the City and the two bottom clubs, Leyt on and New Brompton, is being widened. Exeter's form in the first half today was fine. Millwall were never in the hunt, and every man on the Exeter side played well.
ROYAL MARINES V CITY RESERVES. Plymouth and District League.
At the Brickfields, Devonport, before a good crowd. Exeter Reserves kicked off and were soon on the attack. They kept up the pressure until the Marines got a free-kick, when Reeves set his forwards going, and after a clever bout of passing McDonald scored. Exeter showed by far the better form, and in one of their attacks Prince had to punch a fast shot from Griffiths over the bar. The Marines, however, broke away, and Mc Donald scored another goal. Half-time: Marines 2 Exeter Reserves nil. On resuming Griffiths came up into the forward line, and Roberts moved back. The Marines attacked and netted the ball, but the score was declared offside. F.Prideaux, who was the best half-back on the field, made a fine individual effort, but after beating several players and drawing the defence his effort was wasted by Bailey missing his pass. Although nearly the entire game took place in their half of the field the Marines broke away again and scored another goal.
Final: Marines 3-0 Exeter Reserves.
