Southern League
Reading (Away)
Plymouth and District League
Oreston Rovers (a)
Good Friday, April 5th 1912.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
READING v EXETER CITY.
There was an attendance of 7,000 at Elm Park. Exeter came with the team which had shared the points at Coventry last week, and Reading were without their two amateurs, Bailey and Hanney. Pratt lost the toss, and Reading played with the advantage of both wind and sun behind them in the first half, but their football was disappointing. On the other hand, Exeter City were very smart, being much more skilful than their opponents, and quicker on the ball. They held their own, and more so, despite the fact that after about fifteen minutes' play they lost the services of Fort, who was so badly hurt in a collision with Andrews that he was forced to retire, taking no further part in the match. Bassett went to right back, and Watson to right half. The game had opened sensationally, Griffiths scoring from a corner taken by Cornan. Caldwell got his hands to the ball from Griffiths's shot, but could not keep it out of the net. Later on, Pym appeared to be behind his line when he saved a shot from Greer, but the referee refused Reading's appeal for a goal. Rutter struck the crossbar when he should easily have put his shot much lower, but made amends when he broke through and netted with a fine shot after receiving from Parnell. At half-time the City were leading by 2-nil.
Reading played better in the second half, and Greer headed a nice goal. Final: Exeter City 2, Reading 1.
Teams :
Reading:- Caldwell; Smith, Bartholomew; Smart, Worley, Bradley; Lee, Bell, Foster, Andrews, and Greer.
City:- Pym; Fort, Evans; Bassett, Pratt, Lockett; Parnell, Watson, Rutter, Cornan, and Griffiths.
ORESTON ROVERS v CITY RESERVES.
Played at Oreston, in connection with the Plymouth & District League. Exeter arrived a man short, but were the first to attack, Bustin having to be smart to get the ball away following clever play by Lewis. There was nothing to choose between the sides at the start, and considering the City had only forwards, the line was doing remarkably well.
After ten minutes, however, Oreston got away. Rogers sent in a fast shot from the wing which Chapman failed to hold, leaving Whear a simple chance, which he did not miss. By this time Oreston were doing nearly all the attacking, but Prideaux was a tower of strength in the Reserves' team, placing the ball to the advantage of his forwards time after time. In a fierce melee round the Exeter goal Rogers had a shot charged down after Whittaker had missed the ball, and Chapman cleared. Lewis had a shot saved by Santillo, and Addicott failed to get close enough when put through by Prideaux. At the interval the Rovers were leading by one goal to nil. There was no scoring in the second half, although the Rovers continued to have the better of the game, and forced a number of corners. Whittaker and Prideaux shared the honours for the City Reserves, and Chapman had a busy time in goal.
