NORWICH v EXETER CITY
Saturday, April 13th 1912.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE MATCH AT NORWICH.
Fine weather favoured the fixture, but there were only about three thousand present when the teams came out. Pratt lost the toss, and Exeter kicked off down the slope, but with the sun in their eyes. Norwich City have had several narrow escapes from defeat at home this season, and in this match they only saved themselves by a goal scored in the very last minute. It was not a very inspiring game, and Exeter supplied most of its attractive features. Garside's speed proved very serviceable on the left wing, and Whittaker, on the other side, always made good use of the ball, but once the sphere arrived in the middle it was generally snapped up by either Hampson or Mackenzie. Mellor had to make smart saves from Cornan and Rutter in the first fifteen minutes, but was powerless to prevent the Grecians scoring shortly before half-time, when Cornan took a centre from Whittaker in his stride and beat the goalkeeper from ten yards' range. The Norwich forwards had been very subdued throughout the opening half, Pym having had only two shots to deal with. The game underwent something of a transformation in the second period, which was spent by the "Canaries" in bringing out the sterling qualities of the Exeter defence. Pym prevented Curtin from scoring by falling on the ball, then flicked another shot by the same player over the bar. Exeter held out until the last minute, then, following a corner, Wilkinson drove the ball from twenty-five yards over the heads of the players and just underneath the bar.
Final: Norwich City 1, Exeter City 1.
Norwich. Mellor; Hampson, Mackenzie; Wilkinson, Wolstenholme, Pilch; Curtin, Ingham, Birchall, Woods, and Potter.
Exeter. Pym; Bassett, Evans; Rigby, Pratt, Lockett; Whittaker, Watson, Rutter, Cornan, and Garside.
CITY RESERVES v TOPSHAM ST MARGARET'S.
Exeter Reserves were down to play the R.G.A. this afternoon, but the military could not get away, and a match was fixed up at St. James's Park against Topsham.
Reserves:- Chapman; Heppell, Labbett; Clarke, Griffiths, Martin; Arscott, Lewis, Bailey, Addicott, and Hore.
Topsham:- West; Chave, Hunt; Pulman, Simmons, Wannell; Little, Luxon, Willatts, Alford, and Simmons (No.2).
Although the City's team was practically all amateur, they had little in the way of opposition from Topsham, and won by 4-one. Griffiths scored for Exeter in the first half, and Simmons (2) equalised just after the turn-round. Exeter's remaining goals were obtained by Addicott, Bailey, and Lewis.
