Crompton's Goal Wins the Match

CITY V NORWICH:
SATURDAY OCTOBER 19TH
Exeter City 1 Norwich City 0.

When the City forwards locate the goal they can score freely, but they were far from blameless in this respect at St. James's Park today, against Norwich City. True, they won, but at the end of the seasons goal averages are valuable assets, and it would be the height of folly to say that Exeter City's goal average is a satisfactory one. They played excellent football today against Norwich, but failed badly near goal.

CITY: Pym; Fort, Hurst; Rigby Pratt, Bassett; Whittaker, Crompton, Rutter, Lockett, Ives.

NORWICH: Mellor; Hampson, Mackenzie; Pearson, Wolstenholme, Woodlands; Bauchop, Ingham, Travis, Woods, Potter.

Early in the game Mellor collected a centre from Whittaker, and after Hampson had checked the Exeter left wing Ives broke through. His centre was perfect, and Crompton had no difficulty in heading the ball into the net. From this point onwards Exeter held the whip-hand, although in the concluding stages of the game the "Canaries" made desperate efforts to equalise. It was then that the value of an efficient defence was seen, for the City backs and halves all combined effectively to prevent the visitors getting a grip on the game. Bassett did reasonably well in his new position of left-half, but he is more at home on the opposite flank, and it seems he is being used as a stop-gap to accomodate Rigby in the right-half position.

Plymouth League:
Middlesex Regt. v City Reserves.

Exeter Reserves were beaten by the 4th. Middlesex Regiment at the Brickfields after leading by a goal to nil at half-time, Lindsell scoring twice for the Soldiers in the second half. Golightly scored for the Reserves. Brooksbank was carried off with a badly injured ankle when the score was 1 - 1.
