WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 23RD:

SOUTHERN LEAGUE MATCH

Exeter City 4 Bristol Rovers 0.
Although without Bassett, injured, for most of the second half the City proved far too good for Bristol Rovers, and won by four goals to nil.
CITY Pym Nevin Hurst Rigby Pratt Bassett. Whittaker Cooper Rutter Crompton Garside
ROVERS Roney Bennett Harvie Nevin Harris Morris Griffiths Brogan Roe Haggart Palmer
Attendance 3,000. The grass was very wet and slippery after a morning of steady rain, and players found difficulty in keeping their feet on the treacherous surface.
However, the City overcame the conditions far better than their visitors from Bristol, and the match was so one-sided that the result was a foregone conclusion long before the end, and all that remained to be seen was the number of goals that the City would score.
Rarely in the Game.
The first half was practically all Exeter City, Bristol Rovers being rarely in the game. Early in the second half Bassett was injured, and forced to retire, and against a depleted City team the Rovers improved, but were still unable to score. Exeter scored two goals in each half. Crompton, from a free kick, and Rutter, with a good header, did the needful in the opening chapter, and added another goal each afterwards. Ralph Nevin's brother was at left-half in the Bristol team.
- EXETER CITY'S LEAGUE POSITION. In the Top Half of the Table. Last year's poor results could be partly accounted for due to the abnormal number of injuries sustained, it being very seldom possible to field a settled team. That has not been the case this season, and despite the acquisition of new forwards the chief cause of the trouble has been the inability of the forwards when it comes to shooting. However, the recent victories against Norwich City and Bristol Rovers, preceded by a draw at Reading and a win over Southampton, have brightened the outlook considerably, and from being third from last at the end of September the Grecians are now ninth from the top.
