Exeter City v West Ham.

For their Southern League engagement at St. James's Park, the Hammers brought a strong side, but had to be content with a draw. The visitors had most of the play throughout the first half, but their forwards were unable to find the net, several efforts being sent wide, and several more being safely gathered by PymPlay was rather uneventful in the second period, when the City were generally the faster and more direct side, but as with the Hammers in the first half, they did not shoot often enough or straight enough. Final: City Nil  West Ham Nil

EXETER CITY DRAW WITH WEST HAM.

Wretched weather prevailed at Exeter yesterday, when West Ham played their return League game with Exeter City. The homesters had Fort at right back, whilst the visitors altered their forward line. There were between 2,000 and 3,000 spectators.
Teams :-
Exeter City-Pym; Fort, Hurst; Rigby, Pratt, Lockett; Whittaker, Cooper, Rutter, Crompton, Garside.

West Ham United Hughes; Rothwell, Irvine; Whiteman, Askew, Randall; Ashton, Shea, Denyer, Burrow, Harrison.

Exeter lost the toss, and in a heavy downpour and against a strong wind they kicked off. They immediately broke through, Cooper sending wide in the first minute. West Ham retaliated, and Pym left his goal and cleared brilliantly from Denyer. For a time play settled in midfield. Eventually Whittaker broke away for Exeter, and from his centre Hughes saved a header from Rutter. Play was quickly transferred again, and Shea sent a terrific shot just wide. West Ham were penalised for fouling, and from the free kick Rothwell sent the ball well down the field. The Hammers took up the attack, and for some moments the home defence was given plenty of work. Hurst stopped their left wing. but they came again, and through the agency of Shea and Ashton almost opened the scoring, Pym just clearing as he was bowled over. The first corner of the match fell to the visitors, but the kick was poorly placed and the ball dropped behind. Having regard to the conditions, play was fast and at times exciting. Pym again distinguished himself with a bril- liant save from Harrison, and at the other end Rutter had a chance, but the ball was kicked away. Offside against Exeter stopped a likely looking movement.

At the interval there was no score

On the resumption West Han forced a corner, but this was cleared, and the break-away by Exeter was stopped by Rothwell. A clever movement by the visit- ing left wing completely beat the home defence, and ended in Harrison missing by inches, and another at tack by the Hammers saw Pym conspicuous for a clever save from Whiteman. West Ham were several times penalised for questionable tactics, but Exeter could not take advantage of their opportunities. The downfall of the home goal looked certain when Shea dashed through on his own, but he shot high over. Ashton and Shes were very troublesome to the Exeter defence, and Hurst had all his work cut out to deal with their movements.

Result:-Exeter City, 0; West Ham, 0.

COMMENTS.

West Ham were the superior side in the finer points of the game, and but for a great goal-keeping display by Pym, Exeter would probably have been behind at the interval. The City were rather disappointing after their recent victories, the forwards being disjointed and wild. At half, too, there was a weakness, Exeter's trio being slow and cumbersome. The "Hammers" were a very clever combination, Shea and Ashton making a capital right wing. Exeter will do well to replace Crompton at inside right, for Cooper and Whittaker do not appear to make an effective wing.
